Professional History
I have worked in the mental health field since 1988, and with older adults in particular since 2004. This has included serving in both academic and clinical settings, as well as in the U.S. Army Medical Department.
Given my military history, it was a natural step when I joined the Geriatrics and Extended Care Medicine service of the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System in 2008. I retired from Federal service in 2024 and I have been in private practice since.
Aside from my regular work, I also serve as a member of the medical staff for the “Seattle Seawolves,” the Seattle affiliate team of U.S. Major League Rugby. In this work, I focus on training players in the development of mental toughness and other resilience skills, as well as on the behavioral and psychological aspects of recovering from injuries.
I also serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the Franke Tobey Jones Senior Living Facility in Tacoma. Additionally, I am the Co-Chair of the "Faith, Religiosity, and Spirituality in Aging" special interest group of the American Geriatrics Society.
"Shanachie" is the English pronunciation of the native Irish word "Seanchai", referring to an older person who is a keeper of history, wisdom, and folk traditions.
